Look What Happened to Me After I Went to the Fire Engine Rally
Thursday, 12 June 2008

As the 25 th Annual Great Fire Engine Rally quickly approaches, we had an opportunity to speak with one of the attendees of the 1 st Rally in 1983.   Dan Hill, a second-generation firefighter with the City of St. Louis, sat down with us to share his experiences:

Q:   How old were you when you attended the first rally?

A:   I was 6 years old and the rally was at the Jefferson Memorial in Forest Park.

Q:   Who took you?

A:   My parents, Joan and Bill Hill.

Q:   What do you remember most about the 1 st Rally?

A:   Seeing all the fire trucks.   The tiller trucks were my favorite.

Q:   What was your favorite part about the rally?

A:   The Firefighter Challenges are always exciting.  And it's a safe way for kids to see firemen in action.

Letter from Fire Chief Dennis M. Jenkerson
Monday, 02 June 2008

Hello and welcome to the new website for the Great Fire Engine Rally. Here you will find all the information you need about this year's 25 th Annual Rally.   You are going to notice several big changes. First is the date, so mark your calendars for SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2008.   This is the first time in the history of the rally we have moved the rally from Sunday to Saturday.   We think it's going to make it easier for everyone for traveling and planning.   You will also notice the new location under the Arch!   St. Louis is a great area with a lot of really fun places to see and visit but nothing says St. Louis like the Gateway Arch.

Established in 1857, the St. Louis Fire Department has over 150 years of tradition and being “Justifiably Proud”.   We work very hard at being the best for our citizens and the surrounding communities. In St. Louis County, there are over 40 paid and combination departments and they are all top notch.   We are very fortunate to be surrounded by so many great departments.   St. Louis City and the metro area departments have established a great mutual aid program and we help each other out on a very regular basis.   The Great Fire Engine Rally is no different.   When you come to St. Louis for the Rally, you're going to have a chance to see everyone working together to provide you and your family with a safe, educational, and fun-filled day the whole family will enjoy.   This event is hosted by the St. Louis Fire Department, but without the support of the greater St. Louis Metro Fire Departments, this event would not be possible.

I would like to personally invite everyone to our great city for this fun event.   If you're a firefighter, fire buff, or a citizen who loves fire trucks, the fire service, and the people who answer the call, this is a great opportunity to come and help us celebrate the long & rich history of the fire service.

Please take a look around on the site.   Register your fire truck for the parade, sign up for the firefighters' challenge, or get a spot to sell your collectables.   Have a safe summer and we hope to see you in September under the Gateway Arch!

Respectfully,

Dennis M. Jenkerson

Fire Chief
